Patagonia: Los Glaciares
With arid Patagonia to the east and the snowy Andes to the west, Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina runs along the border of Chile. Here, glaciers born on ice caps occupy half the park’s area, making it the largest ice extension in the world after Antarctica. The villages of El Calafate at the southern end of the park and El Chaltén to the north, are the main points of access to Los Glaciares, a true paradise for those seeking adventure.
DAY ONE
Transfer to the domestic airport for your three-hour flight to El Calafate, where, upon arrival, you will be met and privately transferred to Chaltén. Depart on a wildly aesthetic three-and-a-half hour ride to your hostería in El Chaltén, a comfortable and cozy lodge where granite peaks, lakes, woods, and glaciers come together in one of the most breathtaking parts of the world. On this magnificent drive you are bound to see the quintessential denizens of the steppe, guanacos and rheas.
After check-in, relax and enjoy the incredible views of the towering peaks of Mount Fitz Roy and Mount Torre that surround your hotel. If you’re up for it, your hosts (two climbing enthusiasts, themselves) can suggest a nearby hike for you to take. This evening, you’ll enjoy a unique dinner at the hotel restaurant, specializing in international cuisine with a touch of local Patagonian flavor, and using ingredients from the Patagonian forest.
Overnight Hostería El Pilar
DAY TWO
After breakfast this morning, you’ll embark on your Viedma Glacier excursion, starting with a sail on Lake Viedma and ending with a walk among ice that has become exposed as the glacier recedes
Next, take a two-and-a-half-hour hike up the sides of the glacier and visit the amazing ice caves formed by the glaciers’ movements. A peaceful 30-minute sail back to the hotel, passing Cerro Huemul and Mascarelo Range, brings the day to a satisfying end.
Overnight Hostería El Pilar
DAY THREE
After breakfast this morning, you will be privately transferred from Chaltén to Calafate.
Upon arrival, check in to your hotel. Located on a hill overlooking Lake Argentino, Calafate town and the Andes, your hotel features contemporary design with Patagonian elements, and offers spacious rooms with fabulous views. The afternoon and evening are at leisure.
Overnight Esplendor Hotel
DAY FOUR
Today’s excursion is to Los Glaciares National Park, where you will trek over one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating. Leave Calafate heading west one-and-a-half hours towards the Andes, passing through a vast landscape of open steppe where you’ll see pink flamingos in the misty lagoons, and condors soaring in the sky.
Your excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier begins with a short boat ride across the Rico Fjord of Lake Argentino and an hour’s hike through the Lenga Forest. After a briefing, your guides will equip you with crampons that will enable you to walk across the immense plateau of ice. You'll hike for nearly one-and-a-half hours, passing crevices, caves, and underwater rivers in every shade of blue. If you’re up for a more difficult adventure, we can arrange a hike to the center of the glacier. *
Stop for a rest and a scotch poured over 15,000 year-old ice chipped from the glacier’s top. You'll have your picnic lunch along the shore of a peaceful lake among the ice.
A 15-minute boat ride will bring you to the Glacier Catwalks which offer incredible views across the Iceberg Channel. After listening to the sounds of calving glaciers and enjoying the immense landscape, you will return to your hotel.
