Península Valdés: Wildlife Coast

Off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Northeast Patagonia, the Península Valdés is one of the most valuable wildlife habitats in the world. Featuring the same dry climate as Patagonia, the peninsula is a vast area of barren lands, salt lakes, and vibrant coastlines.

  • DAY ONE

Following your two-and-a-half hour flight from Buenos Aires to Trelew, you will be met and transferred another two hours to Puerto Piramides, a narrow bay area protected by cliffs--and the only town on Península Valdés.

After check-in at your hotel, you’ll have the remainder of the afternoon to spend at your leisure. Based on your arrival time, we will provide you with suggestions for the afternoon, which may include fishing, snorkeling, diving, hiking, and sandboarding.

  • DAY TWO

After breakfast, you will board a nearby boat and embark on a whale watching tour. Protected bodies of water between the peninsula and mainland are home to nearly a third of the population of the endangered Southern Right Whale during their June to November breeding season. While mothers and cubs swim gently beneath and alongside the boat, you’ll see other whales in the distance breaching in series. You may also spot sea lions and cormorant colonies at the foot of the pyramid-shaped cliffs.

Spend the afternoon enjoying the beach, snorkeling, or hiking along the ragged cliffs.

  • DAY THREE

This morning, drive to the rocky coastline of Punta Delgada, home to the largest colony of southern elephant seals in South America.  These are most spectacular during breeding season (September to December), and perhaps least so during molting season (January to April).

On your way, you’ll likely see specimens of the indigenous inland fauna that inhabit this remote area: rheas (Patagonian ostrich), guanacos (South American camelid), maras (Patagonian hare), piches (armadillos), grey foxes, and herons. Continue on to a narrow 30 km. strip on the west coast of the peninsula, where you’ll find a gorgeous turquoise ocean inlet that is perfect for swimming. This is one of the most panoramic points of the peninsula, and also the best place for walrus spotting.

Finally, continue on to “the land of penguins,” from August to April home to an amazing penguin colony of more than 200,000 Magellan penguins. Here, you’ll enjoy a typical Argentine asado, including Patagonian Lamb, at the Estancia San Lorenzo.

In the afternoon, travel on to Punta Norte, where, in late fall, you may be lucky enough to spot a Killer Whale.

When ready, return back to your hotel in time to rest before dinner.

  • DAY FOUR

Following breakfast this morning, you will be driven to Trelew Airport in time to meet your flight back to Buenos Aires or to continue on to your next Willing Foot destination.
