Guatemala: Antigua: An Ancient Adventure

Antigua is famed for its colonial feel, abundance of churches, and active volcano.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Upon arrival in Guatemala City you will be privately transferred to Antigua.  Spend the afternoon and evening at your leisure at the Posada, relaxing before beginning your adventure the next day.

DAY TWO

This morning, your private guide will meet you at the hotel to begin a half-day walking tour of Antigua.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Antiqua is most famous for its well-preserved Spanish Mudejar-influenced architecture, in addition to a number of ruins of colonial churches. Today’s tour will cover the highlights of the colonial city, which include the San Fransico Church, the Cathedral of San Jose, Central Park, and La Merced Church.  This tour is flexible, other sites may be visited if desired.

After the tour, your guide will accompany you back to the hotel or to the place of your choosing.

DAY THREE

Begin the day with a morning transfer to the foothills of the active Pacaya volcano. Pacaya first erupted approximately 23,000 years ago and has erupted at least 23 times since the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the last reported eruption in May 2010.

A fairly strenuous hike takes you through a pine forest and over volcanic ash to the sulfur-smoking cone at the top.  On occasion, you may even witness small eruptions and lava flow depending on the activity of the volcano.  From the summit, enjoy fabulous views from the northern volcanoes and Pacific Lowlands all the way to El Salvador.

On your descent, enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the volcano. Following lunch a support vehicle awaits for your transfer back to Antigua.

DAY FOUR

You will be transferred to the airport today in time to meet your international flight home or to continue on to your next Willing Foot destination.
