Guatemala: Guatemala: Short & Sweet

Guatemala is a magnificent country rich in volcanic landscapes, archaeological sites and indigenous culture.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Guatemala City.  You will have the remainder of the afternoon to relax and get situated at your hotel before beginning your upcoming adventure.

 

DAY TWO

You will be picked up by your driver and transferred to Guatemala City Airport, where you will take a morning flight to Flores, Petén.  Once in Flores, your driver will transfer you to Tikal National Park.

The magical Mayan Ruins of Tikal are located in Tikal National Park – a 576 Km2 site declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979. The site’s mapped district covers 16 Km2 and comprises more than 3,000 individual structures, temples and courtyard groups. The metropolis was occupied during the period between 800 BC and 900 AD, but the earliest architecture originates from the 4th century BC. The nobility resided in the Central and North Acropolis, the administrative centre of the city, which is also where various rulers were buried.  The tallest temple in Tikal is Temple IV, standing at a grand 230 ft in height.

Enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant this afternoon. After your meal, you will have time to explore the museum or return to the site unguided before being your transfer back to the hotel.

 

DAY THREE

Head back to Flores Airport this morning for your flight to Guatemala City, where you will be met by your driver and transferred to Lake Atitlán, the deepest lake in Central America and one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Upon arrival at the lake, you will board a boat to the village of Santiago, where you will break for lunch.

After lunch, take a walk with your guide to in search of the house where the Maya God Maximón is believed to be living. Here you may see a local shaman performing rituals for local people, and if you wish you may ask your guide to help in hiring the services of the shaman for your own personal ceremony.

Transfer back to the hotel later this afternoon.

 

DAY FOUR

This morning, you will be picked up at the hotel by your guide and boat driver for the day and transferred 30-minutes by boat up to the traditional town of Sololá.  On market days this town is bustling with life, as the local Maya people from the surrounding areas flock to the market to buy and sell their wares for the week ahead. The site of considerable violence during the civil war in Guatemala, the village largely remains home to indigenous Mayans, providing true insight into daily indigenous life.

Later today you will be transferred to Antigua, breaking for a local lunch on the way. A city in the central highlands of Guatemala, Antigua is famed for its colonial feel, abundance of churches, and active volcano.

Your guided visit of Antigua covers the highlights of the colonial city, including San Francisco Church, the Cathedral of San Jose, Central Park and La Merced Church.  This tour is flexible, other sites may be visited if desired.

DAY FIVE

This morning your driver will transfer you to Guatemala City Airport (1 Hour), in plenty of time to catch our flight or continue on to your next Willing Foot adventure.
