Copán Ruinas: Hidden Hideaways
Honduras, the hidden gem of Central America, is rich with Mayan sites, colorful wildlife, and exotic culture. This trip offers you a chance to interact with local people and partake in numerous socially responsible projects.
DAY ONE
Upon arrival in San Pedro Sula, you will be met and transferred 3-hours by your driver to the pretty highland town of Copán Ruinas.
Check into your lovely hacienda, a 100-year old family-owned retreat nestled in the hills above the Copán Valley. You will have the rest of the afternoon free to explore this charming colonial town.
For dinner, enjoy authentic country cuisine at the hacienda this evening.
Overnight at Hacienda San Lucas
DAY TWO
Today, with your private guide, you will visit the famous site of Copán, known as the Paris of ancient Maya cities. Copán boasts amazing ruins that include an intricately carved stelae and a hieroglyphic stairway.
After visits to the various sites and local museum, you will return to Hacienda San Lucas for lunch.
Later, walk in the lush, shady river valley of the Copán Bird Park, where a local guide will accompany you to introduce you to a wealth of beautiful tropical birds, rescued from all over Honduras.
Overnight at Hacienda San Lucas
DAY THREE
You will begin the day with a private transfer to your cozy ecolodge at the foot of the Pico Bonito National Park.
In the afternoon, you will visit the La Ceiba-based Adelante Foundation, which is working to eliminate poverty by providing "micro-credit" loans to impoverished women in rural Honduras. Embark on a unique and educational excursion where you will travel into the backcountry of Honduras, with an English-speaking member of the Adelante staff. Attend an "Assembly", where 30-50 Adelante borrowers meet to learn new business skills and important health or nutrition information. End your day with a stop at a current client's business operation to discuss her past struggles and developmentb opportunities. (A portion of the proceeds from booking this trip will go to the Adelante Foundation, a U.S. registered non-profit foundation.)
Later this afternoon, enjoy the activities and cuisine that the lodge offers.
Overnight at the Pico Bonito Lodge
DAY FOUR
After breakfast, transfer to a wildlife refuge situated approximately 20 miles from La Ceiba, home to many endangered species found within the mangrove channels proceeding from the brackish rivers Cuero y Salado. Manatees, monkeys, alligators and a variety of birds are among the highlights of this protected and diverse habitat.
Break for lunch before your transfer back to the lodge. Enjoy leisure time at the lodge later this afternoon, with various hikes and swims available.
