Agra Extension
South of New Delhi, along the banks of the River Yamuna, the city of Agra displays a fine architectural heritage as home to a series of forts, tombs, and gardens designed by the Mughals throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. It is generally accepted that the city was established in the early 1500’s; There followed the city’s Golden Age as the capital of the Mughal Empire, during which the construction of the revered Taj Mahal took place. Agra is also known for its superb inlay work on marble and soapstone, in addition to its carpets, gold thread embroidery, and leather shoes.
DAY ONE
After breakfast this morning, you’ll be privately transferred approximately five hours from Delhi to Agra, a pleasant city with a comparatively easy pace.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel, a sprawling property surrounded by six acres of lush gardens, with spacious rooms overlooking the Taj Mahal. The hotel houses various restaurants that use local ingredients in preparing colorful regional favorites.
After you’ve had time to settle in, you’ll depart on a half-day tour of Agra, which includes the famous sandstone Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah. Situated along the Yamuna, the fort was built in the 16th century by three generations of Mughal emperors, and is a superb synthesis of stern military fortifications with delicate interior details. (The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.)
