Abel Tasman: Magnificent Coastal Hike

Begin your stay in Nelson, a vibrant city along the gently-flowing Maitai River. Setting out, you will walk the spectacular Coast Track from Totaranui in the north to Marahau in the south. Follow the trails, shaded by lush native forest, to protected golden-sand beaches and wide, sandy estuaries. Your expert guide will help you to discover the unique natural wonders along the coast, and share stories about the region's Maori and European settlements.

  • DAY ONE

    Upon arrival in Nelson you will be met by your local guide, who will transfer you to your hotel, an 1100 sq ft luxury cottage perched high on the cliffs near Nelson, overlooking sandy beaches, the glittering Tasman Sea and the sparkling lights of Nelson. En route enjoy a tour of the Nelson Region - famous for its arts, crafts and wine.

    Highlights of the afternoon include a visit to the workshop at Höglund Glass, where you can watch craftsmen blow exquisite colored vases and the World of Wearable Arts museum. Visit boutique wineries such as Tasman Bay, Neudorf, Waimea Estate, Himmelsfeld or Moutere Hills.

    At the conclusion of the day, transfer to your cottage to relax and settle into the beautiful new surroundings or to enjoy the spa pool set right on the cliff edge which offers breathtaking views!

    For dinner this evening your host will recommend a local restaurant.

  • DAY TWO

    This morning you will be transferred by coach to Motueka where you will meet your guide for your Abel Tasman Coastal Hike. You will have a briefing before departing by coach to Kaiteriteri. Your guided walk is with a group of a maximum of 26 people. Private guiding is available at an additional cost.**

    Depart Kaiteriteri, on a fast, safe, comfortable cruise along the National Park coastline to Totaranui. Facilities onboard include hot and cold drinks and open and enclosed viewing decks.

    Upon arrival in Totaranui, begin by walking the gentlest grade on the track, where you will discover the pristine bays and headlands named by French explorer, Du’mont Durville in 1827. Stop for a picnic lunch at any one of the bays, and then continue on to Torrent Bay Lodge on the beachfront for your first night in the park.

  • DAY THREE

    Depart Torrent Bay to enjoy a morning walk through native forest with magnificent coastal views, crossing the swing bridge at Falls River. Stop for lunch at Bark Bay or continue on to Onetahuti, taking time out to relax, explore, swim or sunbathe on the golden sands. Visit places of historical and scenic interest, including the abandoned Tonga Quarry.

    From Onetahuti, walk over the Tonga Saddle to Meadowbank Homestead, Awaroa.

  • DAY FOUR

    This morning cross the Awaroa estuary, where you will be introduced to the region's fascinating history. Walk through the northern forests of the park where you will see magnificent specimens of Nikau Palm and Rata. At Totoranui, join a comfortable launch to cruise the coastline you have just walked. Hot beverages are available on board, enjoyed on covered or open decks.

    At the conclusion of your cruise, you will be transferred by coach back to your hotel near Nelson.

  • DAY FIVE

    This morning, you will be transferred to Nelson airport by private vehicle in time for your departure flight, or continue on to your next Willing Foot itinerary.
