Peru: History of Peru and the Ancient Inca Tales

Peru is filled with ample amounts of history and excitement. Explore cities where the Ancient Incans once resided and experience modern day Peruvian culture from Lima to Cusco.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Upon arrival in Cusco you will be transferred to your hotel so you can acclimate and rest.

 

DAY TWO

After enjoying a buffet breakfast provided by your hotel you will have the morning at your leisure.

This afternoon a private guide will take you to visit colonial Lima’s downtown: the Main Square, where you can find the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Metropolitan City Hall, historic and traditional buildings. Then, get to know Santo Domingo church and monastery, a XVII century jewel, recognized as cultural heritage by UNESCO. The tour goes on to the modern district of San Isidro. Finally you will visit Larco Museum, a private collection that has a collection of treasures from Old Peru, and makes visitors discover, understand and enjoy more than five thousand years of ancient Peru’s history through more than 45,000 pieces.

 

DAY THREE

After a buffet breakfast provided by your hotel you will have a private morning transfer to the airport in Lima for your flight to Cusco.  Upon your arrival in Cusco you will be transferred to your hotel.

This afternoon you will explore Cusco with a private guide.  The tour will show you the amazing colonial city built on the foundations of the Inca palaces. You will visit the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, where you can appreciate the incredible masonry of the Incas, the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral with its carved woodworks, altars and paintings. You will then be driven to the Inca fortress of Sacsahuamán, to the underground cave and temple of Kenko  You will have a panoramic view of Puca Pucará and then you will enter to Tambomachay, known as the Baths of the Inca. Finally, we stop at the artisanal workshop “ Inka´s Expression” which displays the wonderful silver pieces, paintings and wood carvings of local artisans.

You will have this evening at your leisure.

 

DAY FOUR

This morning enjoy a buffet breakfast and get ready to begin your day.  The day starts off in the small town Pisac, in the Urubamba Valley, where you will visit its traditional market where artisans sell their wares made of alpaca wool, silver, and ceramic, as well as other products from around the region. The experience is one of a mixture of color and tradition. Afterwards, you set off for Chinchero, a charming valley town, and there you will attend a seminar to witness how the townsfolk spin and weave using traditional Andean techniques that they have preserved. You can also try your hand and make your very own cloth to take home with you. Last destination of the day is Ollantaytambo, a distinctive town on account of its typically Incan architectural layout, with narrow streets and canals that bring fresh water. There is an incredible archeological site, as well, with terraced slopes and finely worked stonewalls that show the Incas’ advanced workmanship.

 

DAY FIVE

After enjoying a buffet breakfast at your hotel you will get to explore Moray.  Moray is an interesting archeological site northwest of the city of Cusco in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. You will visit its enormous circular and semi-circular agricultural terraces that were developed from natural cavities in the limestone of the hill; the Incas used them as a botanical laboratory. Not far away are the Maras salt pans, where the finest salt in the world (which enjoys a denomination of origin) is extracted. The area looks like a patchwork of terraces and ponds that are a photographer’s delight. Lunch will be included in this trip.

You will have the evening at your leisure.

 

DAY SIX

Start the morning with a buffet breakfast provided by your hotel.  Awaiting you today is by far and away one of the high points in world travel: Machu Picchu. Your adventure starts on a train ride to the city of Aguas Calientes, where you disembark and then board a bus that drives you to the actual Machu Picchu archeological site. The visit includes every nook and cranny of this UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Afterwards, you will have some free time to explore the site on your own, to relax, or to meditate. At the agreed upon hour, you will descend to Aguas Calientes for an a la carte lunch at Café Inkaterra and, later on, board the train for the return trip to Cusco; you will stop at the Ollantaytambo Station and be picked up and driven to your hotel.

DAY SEVEN

After breakfast this morning we will transfer you at the scheduled time to take a flight back to Lima and connect to home or onto your next Willing Foot Destination.
