Douro Valley: Port Wine Country

The tranquil landscape of the Douro Valley rambles through hillside vineyards and traditional estate properties. Steep hills descend to the banks of the Douro River, creating a striking landscape in vibrant colors that change with each season. The region is home to Portugal's famous port wine and several lesser-known varietals of unique red and white wines, cherries, olives and almonds.

  • DAY ONE

Depart from the city of Porto this morning by private car, winding through the surrounding hills to the wine region of the Douro Valley. En route visit the cities of Braga and Guimaraes, both significant to Portuguese history and national identity

Check into your hotel, an 18th-century estate of exquisite charm set amidst the vineyards that dot this tranquil region. Your room will feature a private terrace, overlooking the Douro River and the hills beyond.

We recommend dinner at the hotel's restaurant this evening, where traditional Portuguese cuisine and a carefully prepared wine list are on the menu.

  • DAY TWO

After breakfast at your hotel this morning, you will depart for an exploration of the Douro Valley's vineyards and varietals, grown on wine-producing farms known as quintas.

You will have a chance to visit one of your local guide's favorite quintas. Walk through the vineyards and the port winery to see how the grapes are processed.

Enjoy lunch at the quinta before returning to your hotel this afternoon. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing by the outdoor pool, enjoying a game of tennis, or strolling through the hotel's beautifully maintained gardens.
