THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Upon your arrival at O.R. Tambo Airport, you will be met and transferred to Johannesburg’s newest eco boutique hotel, situated centrally in Melrose, and featuring a contemporary design.

The hotel has 16 bedrooms which offer crisp white sheets, feather duvets, Oregon pine floors, and blesbok skins that give the rooms a natural feel. Flat screen satellite TVs, iPod Sound Dock, and WiFi ensure that you have the latest technology, and the bathrooms are spacious, with bathtubs and separate rain dance showers.

If you arrive later in the day, dine at the hotel’s restaurant, a stylish bistro overlooking the pool and lush gardens. Finish your evening at the hotel’s champagne bar, where a full range of Veuve Clicquot champagnes are stocked, and some innovative cocktail recipes are available to try.

DAY TWO

You will be met by your guide and vehicle after breakfast for a full day of gallery and art group visits. The city’s thriving art scene proves irresistible, with numerous art galleries dotted around the city, showcasing everything from cutting-edge contemporary to traditional “township art” work.

Your guide will plan the itinerary for the day based on your interests. You will surely stop at the Arts on Main complex, which, with its stylish mix of tenants, has quickly become a culture hub since it opened, and has helped bring life back into the heart of a neglected central business district. The project, the brainchild of the 27-year-old developer Jonathan Liebmann, occupies five renovated warehouses around a central courtyard on the corner of Main and Berea Streets. The complex’s anchor is the studio of the celebrated South African artist William Kentridge, whose presence has helped draw an elite group of chefs, designers, and gallery owners to the city.

Return to your hotel later this afternoon in time to relax before a delicious meal and an evening on the town. We will provide you with a list of selected restaurants at which to dine.

DAY THREE

Your guide will collect you this morning for the second half of your art excursion. Today, your focus will be on the city’s galleries, and you will begin your day at Everard Read, synonymous with the finest art emanating from South Africa, followed by the Goodman Gallery, which is at the forefront of the country’s contemporary art scene, and ending at Kim Sacks Gallery for an extraordinary look at tribal African art from across the continent.

Later today, if you wish to do some shopping, you can stop in at Amatuli and Art Africa.

Return to the hotel to relax and freshen up before dinner; you will have our recommendations of restaurants from which to choose.

DAY FOUR

You will be transferred to O.R. Tambo Airport for your ongoing flight.
