Kayamandi: A Helping Hand

Located on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, Kayamandi was established during the Apartheid regime in the 1950s to house black migrant laborers employed by the surrounding farms in the area. Although the regime ended 15 years ago, many of the townships, including Kayamandi, have seen little economic, social, and political improvement. While poverty is extreme and the rates of those infected with HIV/AIDS are high, there remains, among residents, an incredible sense of community.

  • DAY ONE

Collect your rental car and drive 40 minutes from Cape Town to the Greater Stellenbosch Development Trust this morning. Check in to your bed and breakfast, where you will stay the next three nights.

Begin your visit with a walking tour of Kayamandi Township, beginning your volunteer work in the afternoon. We will provide you with suggestions for dinner this evening.

  • DAY TWO

Your schedule today will depend on your chosen volunteer work.

Education begins as early as age two in South Africa. Volunteers will often work with children, as the Trust encourages a commitment to education by supporting children intellectually and financially during their time in school. The Trust also heads an after-care program at the primary school level, where volunteers can tutor individual students or assist in programs focused on sports, arts, and music.

Volunteers with a background in business are encouraged to participate in the Entrepreneurs Project which, each month, offers a micro-MBA course of over 40 hours during which participants are taught basic entrepreneurial skills. Volunteers will support entrepreneurs in developing their business plans, by showing them, for example, how computers and the Internet can be meaningfully used in their work.
