Coastal Maine: Acadia

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Acadia National Park was established with donations from private citizens seeking to protect the area’s natural beauty—rocky coastlines, granite mountains, and heavy forests thick with moss and evergreens. Bar Harbor, a small village within the park, is a perfect place to sample the local seafood for which Maine is so famous.

  • DAY ONE

Pack a lunch in Camden and drive along Coastal Route 1 this morning. Stop for your picnic at Fort Knox State Park, where picnic tables are spread across the wide lawn beneath the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. After lunch, take the elevator up to the tallest public bridge observatory in the world. From 420 feet above, the view of the Penobscot River and surrounding scenery stretches in seemingly endless bands of blue and green.

Continue your drive, crossing the bridge and traveling about an hour east to the village of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island. Surrounded by Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor boasts gorgeous views of granite cliffs along the rocky coastline, and offers boating, hiking, and genuine charm.

This afternoon, you'll check into your inn, an elegant property overlooking Frenchman's Bay. Relax or take a quiet walk before dinner at a local bistro.

  • DAY TWO

Your day starts with a guided climbing excursion in Acadia National Park. With a range of canyons and cliffs to choose from, this challenging and unforgettable experience can be adapted to suit both experienced climbers and beginners, including children as young as four years old.

Your afternoon is at your leisure. Head into Bar Harbor Village for lunch at a local cafe and spend time wandering through the small shops, which range from high-end galleries to quirky local emporiums. Look for handmade tourmaline jewelry, maple syrup, contemporary works by local artists, and unusual antique finds.

This evening, meet your captain at the Bar Harbor Inn pier for a sunset cruise aboard one of the last original working Maine lobster sloops. Look out for bald eagles, porpoises, and seals as you listen to stories about hauling lobsters in the bay 100 years ago.

Dinner this evening is recommended at a charming, low-key restaurant on the outskirts of Bar Harbor, which offers an ever-changing menu featuring a huge variety of fresh seafood.

  • DAY THREE

After breakfast this morning, meet your Registered Maine Guide at 9am for a half-day kayak tour, exploring the remote west side of Mount Desert Island including: Western Bay, Blue Hill Bay, and potentially Somes Sound, bordered by Norumbega Mountain to the east, and Acadia and St Sauveur Mountains. to the west. Your guide will provide excellent instruction in basic paddling technique and will help you keep a sharp eye out for harbor seals, porpoises, and other marine and bird life, including bald eagles. This four-hour tour covers a total of five to six-and-a-half miles with a short break for a little beachcombing and exploration.

After a hearty lunch, see more of Acadia by land. You'll hike to some of the park's most breathtaking spots with a local guide leading the way. If you went hiking yesterday, there is still plenty more to see. From the pink granite summit of Cadillac Mountain to the rock-edged Atlantic coast, you'll spend your time at Acadia among protected species of unique flora and fauna. The latter includes beavers, porcupines, foxes, bobcats, and black bears.

Tonight, enjoy a relaxed dinner at a nearby restaurant.

  • DAY FOUR

This morning, you'll have the option of renting bicycles and riding a section of the 57-mile network of carriage roads and stone bridges in Acadia on your own. Financed and directed by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. between 1913 and 1940, the woodland roads, free of motor vehicles, are the best example of turn of the century “broken stone” roads in the United States today.

If you'd prefer a quiet morning in, take advantage of the spa services at Bar Harbor's iconic seaside inn.

In the late afternoon, venture out on a traditional Downeast-style lobster boat, a contemporary fishing vessel. Tales of local history and folklore will enhance your boat ride as you watch a modern lobster trap being hauled from the sea bottom and creep in close to the rock ledges, where the harbor seals rest at low tide.

On your last night in Bar Harbor, dine at an intimate restaurant which offers a creative menu and friendly atmosphere.
