Uruguay: Punta Del Este 48 Hours

An hour and a half by car from Montevideo, Punta del Este is famed for its scenic coasts and beautiful beaches.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Upon your arrival in Montevideo, you will pick up your rental car and drive an hour to your accommodation–a beautiful, antique-filled posada located along a quiet side road in La Barra. Owned by an antique shop owner, the posada boasts a homey design, with large, comfortable rooms, a communal table for meals, a library jam-packed with books, and a tranquil outdoor area.

After you’ve had time to settle in at the hotel, drive to José Ignacio for a late lunch at one of Uruguay’s most famous restaurants, which is located right on the beach. The menu offers an array of grilled seafood and local meats, and you must be sure to try the dulce de leche volcano cake for dessert!

Spend the remainder of your afternoon on the beach, swimming and enjoying the sun. When you’re ready, head back to your hotel in time to freshen up before dinner.

For dinner tonight we will suggest a nearby restaurant, which offers fabulous service and even better food. Dine outside and enjoy the ocean views over homemade pasta and fresh fish.

DAY TWO

This morning, meet your guide for a private cycling tour or trek in the Sierras. Along gently rolling country lanes, explore many magical places, passing olive fields and vineyards, taking in the rich colors of wild herbs, and glimpsing the abundance of wildlife. Your ride will come to an end in a local village, where you will find a loaf of fresh bread and some local produce for a picnic lunch.

You may choose to spend the afternoon at your leisure, relaxing and swimming on the beach. If you’re in the mood for something more active, explore the galleries in Punta del Este, with a guide or on your own.

For dinner this evening, drive to a small town located inland which houses two great restaurants from which to choose. In the town’s only hotel, a famous Argentinean chef runs a highly acclaimed restaurant which serves simple, local foods cooked between two wood fires, and breads and desserts freshly baked in a wood oven. For a more casual meal, try a small outdoor restaurant which offers delicious local food for a great price. Though not as fancy, this may be a more comfortable choice for you after spending a long day at the beach.

Return to your accommodation after dinner to rest up for tomorrow’s departure.

DAY THREE

After breakfast this morning, return your car in Montevideo and head to the airport in time to meet your return flight home, or to continue on to your next Willing Foot Uruguayan destination.
