Czech Republic: Prague 48 Hours

Prague is the historical and architectural jewel of central Europe.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Arriving in Prague this morning, you will be met at the airport and transferred by private car to your luxury hotel in the city center, a meticulously restored 17th-century property with a unique private garden and spacious, elegant accommodations.

One you have settled in, meet your guide for a private tour of Prague, the historical and architectural jewel of central Europe. Your guide will discuss the city’s fascinating history as you make your way through several unique neighborhoods including Old Town, New Town, Lesser Town and Hradčany. Continue on to Prague Castle, an ancient symbol of the Czech lands and one of the most important cultural institutions in the Czech Republic, where you will continue your guided tour on foot. The Castle, the largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, consists of several palaces and ecclesiastical buildings in varying architectural styles. Visit the Castle interior, including the St. Vitus Cathedral, a striking example of Gothic architecture which houses the tombs of Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors.

Walk to the banks of the Vltava River where, weather permitting, you will have the option to board a sightseeing boat for a 90-minute cruise. Take in Prague’s sights from this peaceful perspective, including the Charles Bridge, an impressive Gothic structure watched over by 30 Baroque statues, mainly replicas of the original 17th-century works.

Your tour concludes with a pleasant walk through Old Town Square. Return to your hotel on foot and take some time to freshen up before dinner.

Dine this evening at a delightful French restaurant, which features a beautiful Art Nouveau setting and excellent cuisine and is just 5-minutes walk from your hotel.

After dinner, you have the option of attending a Black Light Theater (or simply Black Theater) performance (please request tickets in advance). This performance style, which originated in Asia, has become an important part of the Prague arts scene.  Through dance, acrobatics and mime performers weave in and out of the darkened space in fantastic and sometimes disconcerting performances that play on the imagination. Tickets for opera or Czech folklore performances can be requested as an alternative for this evening.

Return to your hotel by taxi. You may wish to end your evening in the hotel bar. This beautiful space with vaulted Neo-Baroque ceilings is a Prague mainstay. In good weather, the bar expands onto a terrace overlooking the private garden.

DAY TWO

Following breakfast at your hotel this morning, meet your guide at 9:00am and set out by private car for Konopiste Castle, some 30 miles southeast of Prague near the city of Benesov.

Konopiste Castle was the formal seat of the successor to the Habsburg throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este, whose assassination in Sarajevo led to Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war against Serbia, setting in motion the events of World War I.  Franz Ferdinand purchased this 13th-century castle in 1887, converting the space into a luxurious family residence surrounded by a manicured park and rose garden.

In addition to the residential rooms that are open to the public, the castle houses Franz Ferdinand’s large art collection, an unusual shooting hall, and one of the world’s most extensive collections of historical weapons.

Return to the city center for lunch. We will provide you with suggestions.

This afternoon join your guide for a private walking tour of historic Jewish Prague, known as Josefov (Joseph’s Town). Begin with a walk through Old Town, entering the original Jewish quarter at the former home and birthplace of Franz Kafka.

The complex history of the Jewish community in Prague dates back to the early medieval period. In Josefov, explore the history of the original Jewish ghetto and visit the oldest synagogue in Middle Europe, Old-New Synagogue. You will walk through the Old Jewish Cemetery and also visit several synagogues that are part of the unique Prague Jewish Museum complex.

For dinner this evening, we suggest a well-loved and newly redesigned restaurant with a creative menu and a wine list featuring both imported varietals and the stunning wines produced by South Moravian wine masters.

DAY THREE

After breakfast this morning, you will transfer to the airport by private car for your departure flight, or continue on to your next Willing Foot destination.
