Guatemala: Lake Atitlan: Modern Day Maya People

Explore this stunning region where the deepest lake in Central America awaits, surrounded by villages where Mayan culture is still predominant.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Lake Atitlan with a stop in the town of Comapala, where you will visit the famous painted mural that school children of the town have painted depicting major events throughout Guatemala’s history.

You will have the chance to visit various local painters who continue the tradition of naïf paintings that the town is so renowned for. You have the option of visiting the market in Comalapa to witness the local people go about their daily life buying produce and goods. Also, stop by the small museum dedicated to the composer who wrote Guatemala’s national anthem.

After lunch you will be transferred with an English speaking driver to Lake Atitan and your hotel.

  

DAY TWO

Begin your day with a transfer to the village of San Juan La Laguna, where you will visit a local textile cooperative to see the back strap loom in use and to watch the natural dye process. Visit the home and workshop of local naïf painters before boarding a boat to the village of Santiago for lunch.

After lunch, take a walk with your guide to in search of the house where the Maya God Maximón is believed to be living. Here you may see a local shaman performing rituals for local people, and if you wish you may ask your guide to help in hiring the services of the shaman for your own personal ceremony.

Later, visit the local church and learn a bit about the history of this deeply traditional town.

When ready, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

 

DAY THREE

A morning transfer brings you to the highland town of Chichicastenango, an indigenous town known for its traditional K’iche’ Maya culture. Upon arrival, your guide will bring you to the local market, where you will find fresh produce, everyday items, and an endless variety of beautiful textile, wooden, and ceramic crafts.

Stop for a visit at the famous St. Tomas Church, where local people come to perform Mayan rituals with the Catholic Church, demonstrating the interesting way in which the two faiths have combined over the years.

When you are ready, you will be transferred to the airport for your return flight home or continue on to your next Willing Foot destination.
