Italy: Capri: Quintessential Italian Island

An Italian island off the coast of the Campania region of southern Italy, Capri has been a resort destination since the Roman Republic.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

This morning, take the hydrofoil 40 minutes from Naples to Capri. A shuttle from your charming hotel will collect you at the Marina Grande, and drive you to the property located in Anacapri, the highest part of the island. A restored farmhouse, owned by a local Capresi family and situated in a lovely grove of olive and lemon trees, this oasis takes you back to a more rural and authentic Capri.

Late this afternoon, take a taxi or walk 10 minutes into the heart of Anacapri. Visit first the church of San Michele with its glorious majolica floor, and then walk over to Villa San Michele, where you’ll wander its pretty rooms and beautiful gardens. Enjoy the sun setting over the impossibly blue Mediterranean that stretches, uninterrupted, as far as the eye can see.

As you are only a short walk from the center of Anacapri, head into town armed with restaurant suggestions for a delicious spaghetti dish, finished off with a Capresi limoncello, before returning home to your comfortable room and its lush surrounding gardens for the evening.

DAY TWO

After a leisurely breakfast on your terrace, pack up a bathing suit, walk in to town, and take the bus down to Capri. As there are no cars allowed in Capri proper, the bus will leave you just shy of the piazzetta. Stop for an espresso in the piazza, and enjoy the local scene as shopkeepers arrive to open their glamorous boutiques. Day-trippers begin to flood on to the island, so walk through town early, stopping to look at jewelry, the crisp linen Capri pants for which the island is famed, sandals, and perfumes.

Follow Via Tragara to Punta Tragara, and stop to buy a fresh lemonade from the juice stand before heading down the steep cliff to the Faraglioni rocks below. Stake your claim for a chair and towel, and book a fresh fish lunch for 1:30 pm. Enjoy the afternoon, slipping in and out of the sea, sipping a glass of cold white wine or a fresh lemonade. Later this afternoon, request a put-put boat to take you back around the island to the famous Blue Grotto at Anacapri. Arrive after hours, have a quick swim in incomparable waters, and say goodbye to your boatman. Walk up the hill to a local restaurant we suggest for dinner this evening, stopping to watch the sun set along the way.

After a fabulous Italian meal, ask for a taxi to take you back to your hotel, which is but a short drive away.

DAY THREE

Today, you’ll spend the morning walking up to the ruins of a lavish Roman villa perched 1,200 feet above sea level.  This lovely walk through intimate parts of rural Capri leads you to stunning ruins that are perched high above the sea. It is said that the owner flung his enemies off these sheer cliffs on to the rocks below. You will see mosaic floors, remains of walls, capitals, and columns, but it is really the magnificent views and the historical imagination that is the draw here. Return to town and lunch in any one of the trattorias, returning to Anacapri this afternoon to venture by chairlift up to Monte Solaro, the highest part of the island. Having been to the summit of both Capri and Anacapri, you will surely be struck by the magic of this remarkable island.

Dine in Anacapri, or, if you wish to have a late evening in the Piazzetta after all the tourists have left, take a bus or taxi down to the square, and enjoy a ritual that has attracted the famous and infamous for centuries.

DAY FOUR

With hydrofoil trips at 9 am, 12:50 pm, and 5 pm, return to Naples at your leisure today, from where you’ll continue on to your next Willing Foot destination.
