Jamaica

Jamaica: Kingston: Music and Arts Extension

Kingston is Jamaica’s capital and the world capital of reggae and ska music.

THE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

This morning, meet your driver, departing Port Antonio by private car after breakfast and check-out. The drive to Kingston will take 2 ½ – 3 hours, depending on the day’s traffic. Prior to your departure, you will plan your day with the help of your hosts. Choose some of the activities listed below or discuss additional alternatives. Today’s visit to Kingston will be tailored to meet your interests.

Arriving in Kingston, you will stop at Devon House Heritage Site, a 127-year-old mansion, now a national monument on 11 acres of lush sprawling lawns in the heart of Kingston. Break for light refreshments and meet your local guide.

Those with an interest in reggae music will want to head for the Bob Marley Museum, in the singer’s former home and studio. You may also wish to visit Tuff Going Recording Studios or Trench Town. The birthplace of reggae and ska is still an impoverished neighborhood, but the rustic Trench Town Museum and the Culture Yard, with its bright murals, authentically recall the lives of Jamaica’s most famous musicians. Trench Town is the former home of Bob Marley, as well as Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

Your guide will offer suggestions for lunch today.

This afternoon, visit The National Gallery of Jamaica in downtown Kingston, home to the island’s finest art collection. On display is Jamaican art spanning from the early 20th century to the best of the nation’s contemporary works.

Jamaica’s only synagogue is in Kingston as well. Its interior tells of the long and fascinating history of Jews in Jamaica, with a notable gallery and sand-covered floors, a tradition from the Spanish Inquisition period.

If time allows, visit Port Royal, once the flamboyant pirate capital of the Caribbean and the longtime home of the British Navy in the region. The town maintains little of its former splendor; however a peek into pirate history and a visit to the Maritime Museum offer another interesting perspective on Jamaica.

This evening dinner is included at your hotel’s restaurant. Later, if you wish to venture out and explore the city’s nightlife, transfers can be arranged with the hotel concierge.

DAY TWO

If you have time before your departure flight today explore the area surrounding your hotel, New Kingston, on your own or relax on the property’s sweeping veranda with chaise lounges and shade umbrellas beside a 50-foot mosaically-tiled Infinity Edge lap pool.

Your driver will collect you in time for your transfer to the airport to meet your departure flight.
