Peru: Cusco: Adventures in Cusco
Cusco is amazing, but the areas surrounding offer so many opportunities for adventure that can not be missed.
DAY ONE
Upon arrival in Cusco you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Take the evening to relax and enjoy a nice dinner at your hotel or at one of the local restaurants we will recommend.
DAY TWO
After breakfast, you will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the starting point of the Sacred River of the Incas also called “Vilcanota or Urubamba”, where this great experience will begin. Upon arrival, you will have a safety talk and the professional equipment such as life jackets, wet suits, and helmets.
On the river you will practice on the flat part following the guide´s instructions so you will know what to do when you run the river rapids with waves and small whirlpools at different points of the section. After two hours on the river, you will have a lunch enjoying typical food cooked by local people. After your lunch you will be taken back to your hotel to enjoy the rest of the afternoon on your own. Maybe go out and explore or stay at your hotel and relax until dinner.
DAY THREE
This morning you will visit the huge circular and semicircular agricultural terraces near Moray, built on a limestone plateau, that face Urubamba Valley and were used as botanical lab by the Incas. It’s believed they have a mystical meaning. Its function, besides the agricultural one, remains a mystery. Very close, below the colonial town of Maras, you find the mines of one of the finest salts with guarantee of origin and quality, salt of Maras. These mines form old terraces and lagoons, a must for amazing photos. Also you will visit the Andean community of Misminay, where you will be able to live with the tradition preserving locals. Families live along in small single or double room houses, made out of adobe. They raise guinea pigs (cuyes), cattle and sheep. Passenger will be able to plow or harvest the soil, depending on the time of the year and appreciate a toast to honor the earth, ceremony in honor of Mother Earth.Additionally, you will observe the ladies spinning, wool dyeing with natural ingredients, and lastly tapestry knitting, according to the ancient techniques. Then start the route to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, until you get to Cruzpata in the Pampas of Chinchero. From here, you will begin your exciting bicycle tour from the Huaypo Lagoon to reach the experimental Agricultural Site of Moray. The journey continues toward the town of Maras where you will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch and follow the way to the salt mines. This unforgettable experience finishes with a 30-40 minute descent to Pichingoto, crossing the Urubamba River where your private transfer will take you back to your hotel.
DAY FOUR
This morning you will be transferred to the station where you will take a train to Machu-Picku. You will arrive to the Aguas Calientes Station in Machu-Picchu where you will be transported by bus to the top of the mountain and citadel of Machu-Picchu, one of the most renowned examples of Inca architecture, surrounded by lush cloud forest. Lost in history, it was not discovered until 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. After a guided visit of the ruins, you will have a self-service lunch at local restaurant.
After lunch walk around a bit before heading back to the station to take your train back to Cusco and to your hotel.
DAY FIVE
After Breakfast you will be met and transferred to the airport in order to get your flight home or continue on to your next Willing Foot adventure.
