Botswana: Mashatu Game Reserve: Cycling
Mashatu, located on the Northern Tuli Game Reserve of Botswana, and bordering South Africa, is a game reserve which boasts savannah, forests, and vast marshlands.
DAY ONE
Arrive in Johannesburg this afternoon, and spend the evening in a hotel on the outskirts of the city. Dine locally and prepare for your early morning departure.
DAY TWO
This morning, collect your rental car and drive to your meeting point on the South African side of Pont Drift Border Post, and, once the border formalities are complete, you’ll prepare your bikes, load the support vehicle, and enjoy a light lunch before biking to your first wilderness camp. As you cycle through the roaming grounds of lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros you will be accompanied by 2 armed rangers as well as a following back up vehicle.
After an exhilarating afternoon ride, arrive to chilled drinks, a hot bucket shower, and a wholesome dinner prepared over an open fire. A simple yet fully equipped wilderness camp provides for a much-needed night’s rest under starlit skies.
DAY THREE
Awake this morning to fresh brewed coffee and a breakfast of fresh fruits and homemade breads, after which you’ll prepare your bikes for today’s ride over uncharted terrains, testing your biking abilities over rocky outcrops, sandy riverbeds, and open plains.
Break for tea and a cold drink along the route, arriving back at camp in time for lunch before an afternoon siesta. In the late afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to ride or drive to a nearby sundowner point.
DAY FOUR
This morning, bike across changing landscapes towards your final camp.
A pasta lunch and hot showers welcome weary legs, with an opportunity for you to sit back and relax. After an afternoon of leisure, head off on a short walk to a nearby cliff for a stunning sundowner. Return to an open fire-prepared meal, after which a restful night’s sleep under the stars will conclude your safari.
DAY FIVE
A fresh breakfast this morning brings the safari to an end. Drive your rental car back to Johannesburg.
For a chance to view the reserve’s incredible wildlife at close range, we recommend an additional night at the camp, leaving time for a short safari from a game-viewing vehicle.
This is just the beginning.
